OPENAI launches applications inside Chatgpt

OPENAI is launching a new way for developers to create applications inside Chatgpt. From Monday, chatgpt users will be able to access the interactive companies of companies such as Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Racera, Zillow and Canva. Openai also launches an overview of the Applications SDK, the Developer Tool Box to create these applications.

Openai made this announcement during his annual developer conference, DevDay 2025.

“We want Chatgpt to be an excellent way for people to progress, to be more productive, more inventive, to learn more quickly, to do what they are trying to do in their lives,” said CEO Sam Altman. “(Applications inside Chatgpt) will allow a new generation of interactive, adaptive and personalized applications with which you can discuss.”

The new system is OpenAi’s latest attempt to build an application ecosystem around its product, Chatgpt. The launch follows the previous attempts of OPENAI to allow developers to build interactive applications, such as via its GPT store. Unlike this product, which was a separate application shop, the launch on Monday places applications directly in chatgpt responses and allows users to call third -party tools in their daily conversations. This gives developers a better distribution for the applications they create and aim to have a richer experience for chatgpt users.

By typing the names of different applications in Chatgpt, users can draw content from a variety of services. For example, users can say: “Figma, transform this sketch into a feasible diagram” to call the Figma application. Users can also call the Racera application by asking: “Racera, can you teach me something about automatic learning?”

In a demo of the Zillow application, users could encourage Chatgpt in natural language to search for apartments in their region in a specific price range. Chatgpt then removed an interactive card showing options, and users could speak with chatgpt to find out more about everyone.

Chatgpt also surfaces relevant applications when they could be useful to a user. If someone asks for a reading list for a party this weekend, Chatgpt can call the Spotify application in the conversation. In the future, Openai says that applications like Doordash, Instacart, Uber and Alltrails will also be available in Chatgpt.

OPENAI claims that the new system is built using the model context protocol (MCP), which allows developers to connect their data sources to an AI system. Chatgpt applications can also trigger actions and make an interactive user interface in chatbot responses. Some applications can display videos in Chatgpt, which will be pinned at the top of the web page and can be modified according to user requests.

If users are already subscribed to a product, they will be able to connect directly to their account directly in Chatgpt to access certain features. Altman also claims that Optai will take care of the means to monetize applications within Chatgpt in the future, including via the recently launched instant payment function of the company in Chatgpt.

Key questions about chatgpt applications will be confidentiality and amount of data to third -party developers will have access. OPENAI says that developers should “collect only the minimum data they need and be transparent on authorizations”. However, it is not clear if the developers would have access to the entire conversation of a user with Chatgpt, the latest messages, or simply the prompt that summoned the application.

We also do not know how Chatgpt will choose a service between competing companies, such as Doordash and Instacart. One could imagine how companies could pay to be surfaced in the responses of Chatgpt, but Openai says that it plans to prioritize the user experience above all.
