Ontario Provincial Police Issue Alert for Armed Suspect in Wiikwemkoong First Nation


The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued an emergency alert Tuesday afternoon warning residents of Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island to lock their doors and windows and shelter in place.

Police said in the alert that a man in the community is considered armed and dangerous.

In a Facebook update, Acting Wikwemikong Tribal Police Chief Scott Cooper said he did not see the man as a threat to the general public, but recommended people continue to stay safe. shelter-in-place « with ultimate security for all in mind ».

Cooper said Wiikwemkoong Board of Education students could be safely removed from school on their regular hours, with the exception of students of students who live in the Cape Smith/Kaboni area, who will be cared for. by school staff.

Cooper said in the post that the rest of the community should continue to shelter in place.

Residents are asked to contact the police if they notice anything suspicious.
