Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell takes silver at the track cycling Nations Cup

MILTON, Ont. — Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell settled for a silver medal in the women’s sprint competition of the Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup on Friday evening.

The Tokyo Olympic champion lost both legs of the final to Germany’s Emma Hinze – the reigning world champion – at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.

Hinze had a 0.019 second advantage in Game 1 and took the win in a photo-finish, beating the Canadian by just 0.008 seconds.

Canadian Lauriane Genest missed out on the podium after losing both heats of third place to Colombian Pineda Bayona.

Genest of Levis, Que., and Mitchell won bronze in the team sprint Thursday with Sarah Orban of Calgary and Jackie Boyle of Toronto.

The competition continues until Sunday.
