Oilers Takeaways: Defensive pairings start to take shape

Win 4-0 at home, lose 3-0 away. So goes the NHL preseason, as an understaffed Edmonton Oilers roster lost a game in Seattle on Monday night.
Edmonton had a five-minute power play sandwiched around the second intermission, but it was clunky. The only goal scored was a Seattle shorty.
« It wasn’t our power play, » laughed veteran Devin Shore. « When the real games start, we’ll have other guys who will increase those numbers. There are a few things we’d like to execute a little better, but we’ll bring the big boys out when it counts.
Two minor penalties marked Mattias Janmark’s preseason debut, while Jake Virtanen was left useless with a shot on goal for the second straight game as his Oilers power grab ends in what appears to be a fruitless road. He missed the net on an excellent chance on Monday, after struggling to find his distance with four shots that never found the net on Sunday.
Goaltenders Ryan Fanti and Olivier Rodrigue split the game, and Fanti faced the toughest half in hockey by far, allowing Rodrigue two goals.
Expect a more veteran Oilers roster for their third of eight preseason games Wednesday night in Calgary.

It looks like head coach Jay Woodcroft is favoring right-hander Tyson Barrie as a veteran partner to play alongside left-handed rookie Philip Broberg.
Woodcroft also said he sees Darnell Nurse playing with Cody Ceci, like they did last season, which leaves the middle pair of Brett Kulak and Evan Bouchard.
Of course, Broberg has to make the team first, and maybe Markus Niemelainen has something to say about that. He had another good night defensively on Monday.
« I can’t wait to play with him, » Barrie said of Broberg. “You are going to see him develop and grow a lot here. We only practiced together. It’s hard to get a full read before going into a game.”
Barrie and Broberg were each 1-under on Monday and led the Oilers in ice time with 24:28 and 22:18, respectively.
They say a veteran should know when to pass on his wisdom when bringing on a rookie and when to shut up. When Barrie was a kid in Colorado, he had senior teammates like Jan Hejda, Greg Zanon and Ryan O’Byrne who took him under their wing.
« I looked back when I was young, I had guys I played with who helped me develop, » he said. « Whether the coach is tough on him, and you (say) ‘Hey, don’t worry about it. Keep playing. Or you’re the guy who has to say, ‘Hey, let’s go here. We have need more of you. There’s a role to play there as an older guy.

Reid Schaefer was probably asked to pack for the trip to Seattle. The Oilers are expected to leave him there to join his junior club – the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds – after playing his second preseason game on Monday.
Schaefer was waiting for his junior team in the stands for a game that earned him 14:26 of ice time.
« I think they’re planning on coming and watching, so that would be pretty cool, » he smiled. “My box office family will also be down so it will be a special night for sure.”
Schaefer made the proportional impression here at his first pro camp that a first round should do. He wasn’t just a passenger – he stood out in every game and looks a lot like someone who will one day be an NHL player.
What is the biggest advance over the junior?
« The pace of play was a big difference, » said the 19-year-old. « Obviously the rookie tournament was a step up, and now with the big boys it’s even bigger to follow them. It’s an interesting fit for sure. But I’m having fun and it’s is exciting.
Going to an NHL camp is great. But trading pucks with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl? It is priceless.
“Yeah, I talked to them a bit. Obviously, fanboy a bit,” he laughed. “You watch them when you grow up, you watch them when you’re a junior, so it’s pretty special to be on the same ice and in the same neighborhood as them. I immerse myself in everything.
