Nova Scotia mass shooting inquiry warns this week will cover ‘difficult’ material – Halifax


Officials from the public inquiry into the 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia warn that this week could be difficult for some as the inquest will focus on domestic and family violence.

The Mass Casualty Commission will release documents detailing the sexual and physical abuse committed by the gunman who killed 22 people on April 18 and 19, 2020.

The commission’s lead lawyer, Emily Hill, said the content would be « challenging and impactful for many ».

Among these documents are five transcripts of « several hours » interviews conducted by the investigation with the shooter’s wife, Lisa Banfield, who will be called to testify on Friday. She will not be cross-examined.

Gabriel Wortman began his 1 p.m. rampage after attacking Banfield, and investigative interviews revealed he assaulted both Banfield and his first wife.

Brenda Forbes, a former neighbor of the shooter, will testify on Wednesday. Forbes told the inquest that in 2013 she filed a complaint with police about an alleged incident of domestic violence involving him and Banfield and reported that he possessed illegal weapons.
