North Carolina police are responding to what they called an ‘active shooting’ in a Raleigh neighborhood, the police tweeted Thursday.
“The Raleigh Police Department is currently at the scene of an active shooting in the Neuse River Greenway area near Osprey Cove Drive and Bay Harbor Drive. Residents of this area are advised to stay at home,” the tweet read.
Helicopter footage from CNN affiliate WRAL-TV showed more than a dozen emergency vehicles lined up on a road through a wooded area.
A local hospital said three victims of an active shooting scene were being treated at a trauma center. Deb Laughery, a spokesperson for the WakeMed Health and Hospitals system, told CNN she did not immediately have information about the victims’ injuries or conditions.
Police have released no information about the shooter or shooters.
Several law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation, Raleigh Police tweeted. Police also advised residents of the Hedingham area to stay indoors in the tweet.
The police later tweeted that residents of the specific area of “McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive and Old Milburnie Road are asked to stay indoors. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper tweeted he spoke with Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and « directed state law enforcement to provide assistance in responding to the active shooter in East Raleigh ».
« State and local officers are on the ground working to arrest the shooter and keep people safe, » the governor said.
Maddie James was at the Hedingham Golf Club driving range when a ‘relentless stream of police’ passed through the area.
« I’ve never seen so many police in one area, that’s what really worried us, » James told CNN, adding that she didn’t hear any gunshots, but the police sirens and EMS were continuous and made it « hard to hear ». ”
James said police were speeding down Southall Road and Wild Dunes Drive, both close to the driving range.
“A golf professional came and told us to shelter inside or leave as soon as possible,” James said. « They were very calm, but I could tell something was wrong, so we left straight away. »
This is a developing story.
