Noem threatens “four times” more federal officers in Portland after meeting the mayor

After meeting the mayor of Portland, Keith Wilson on Tuesday During a visit to PortlandKristi Noem, US Secretary of the Department of Internal Security, said on Fox News that the mayor did not respond to some of his security requests in the installation of the ICE “, we were going to send the quantity of federal officers four times to the city.

Noem’s remarks to Fox host, Jesse Watters, were contrasting with a Wilson declaration Tuesday evening, this did not mention any ultimatum issued by the secretary.

“I continue to argue that the tactics used by federal agents of the ICE establishment are disturbing and probably unconstitutional,” said Wilson. “In terms of recent rhetoric, we still do not know what” full strength “means against Portland, nor how the administration plans to use our city as a” training ground “. Due to these deeply worrying situational strangers, I intend to explore options to protect our community and our right to freedom of expression. »»

The remarks of Portland police chief Bob Day, during a press conference after his meeting with Noem (who, according to him, included Wilson), have conciliated and endeavored by what he called a “holistic approach” to manage the demonstrations outside the Ice Portland establishment.

“There are clearly differences in opinion,” he said about his meeting with the secretary. “I would not say that we are all aligned with each point, but I can say that, you know, we continue to be professionals, and we continue to seek a shared security value.”

When he was asked to answer Noem’s remarks on Fox News, a spokesperson for the Portland police office said in an email: “We are going to leave the chief’s comments to the press conference stand.”

A request for comments from Wilson was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.

Noem arrived in Portland shortly before 11:30 am and went to the installation of ice where she made a tour of the building and appeared for a short period on her roof with the conservative influencer Nick Souteor, who was arrested by the Portland police last week during a demonstration. MultNomah County Prosecutor’s Office refused to charge himSaying that an accusation of disorderly conduct could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

In his interview with Watters, Noem accused Portland of having allowed federal officers of “spending time drying” outside the ice installation.

Noem said that she was disappointed with Wilson’s response to her security requests, a larger buffer area around the building and the streets reopened.

“He did not commit to any of these promises and said that he would give me an answer tomorrow, and I hope he will do it,” she said. “What I told him that if he didn’t follow some of these security measures for our officers, we were going to cover it with more federal resources and that we were going to send the amount of federal officers here.”

Noem also spoke with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, the Sheriff of the County of Multnomah, Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell and the Oregon State Police Superintendent, Casey Codding during his visit to Portland.

The visit of the secretary to the city followed The authorization of President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard to the city at the end of last month. A federal judge during the weekend temporarily blocked deployment.

Oregon leaders argued that there are no need for troops in Portland, as demonstrations are in the immediate ice construction area and local authorities can manage the situation.
