Brazil superstar Neymar sprained his right ankle in his side’s World Cup opener – a 2-0 win over Serbia – on Thursday, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed last night at a post-match press conference.
Lasmar said the team have already started processing Neymar and will have more clarity in 24-48 hours.
“It was a direct trauma where a Serbian player’s knee made a movement that caused the sprain,” added Lasmar.
“He presented with ankle swelling. We immediately started treatment, including on the bench. He is still in physiotherapy treatment now. And we’ll have to wait 24-48 hours before we get a clearer picture of the player’s situation.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker was substituted with 10 minutes remaining after being challenged, and Neymar looked emotional once he arrived on the bench, sitting down and covering his face with his shirt.
Cameras caught Neymar looking at his ankle, which looked badly swollen as he walked off the pitch.
This will no doubt be a huge concern for Brazil – and football fans around the world – whose chances of success would drastically diminish without their star man.
Before his injury departure, Neymar had already shown his class, creating Brazil’s first goal when he danced through the Serbian defense to give a chance to Vinícius Jr., whose shot was saved and fell on Tottenham’s Richarlison to finish for the first of his two on the night.
Brazil started this World Cup as favorites to win their first World Cup since 2002, with a 20% chance of winning the tournament according to Nielsen’s Gracenote, having lost just three times in 50 matches since being eliminated from the tournament. World Cup 2018 by Belgium. .
Neymar will face a race to regain his fitness when Brazil take on Switzerland in their next Group G fixture on November 28.
