BRAMPTON — Ontario New Democrats say they will increase their planned increases to the province’s disability support program.

The change follows criticism that the initial 20% increase the party promised to implement immediately would keep those dependent on ODSP for income below the poverty line.

Now NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has said the party will immediately increase ODSP by 20% and double it from the current rate in the party’s second year in office, if elected.

Horwath said ODSP payments would be indexed so “no Ontarian will ever live in legislated poverty again.”

The Liberals announced they would increase ODSP by 20% over two years, while the Progressive Conservatives added a 5% increase to their platform last week.

The Green Party, meanwhile, has promised to double ODSP payments.
