National Dog Show: French Bulldog wins first prize

Who is a good boy? This year, it’s Winston.

Winston the French Bulldog won Best in Show, first place, at this year’s 21st Annual National dog show presented by Purina. Winston is the first French Bulldog to win the competition’s top prize.

“They cornered the market with energy, enthusiasm and sheer courage,” host John O’Hurley said of Winston and his handler, Perry Payson.

Winston beat hundreds of dogs to win Thursday’s prize. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show airs every Thanksgiving following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and is the most-watched dog show in the nation. Dogs sometimes train for years with the goal of winning the national title.

Last year, Claire – a Scottish Deerhound – made history by becoming the first female dog to win the title two years in a row.

Each year the dogs compete against other dogs of their breed to determine the best in breed. Then all of those winners go head-to-head in the group stage – Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. The top seven dogs in their group then compete to win the best in show.

This year is the first to introduce the Mudi and the Russian Toy, two newly recognized breeds.

But this isn’t Winston’s first fight with fame: he also took part in the Westminster Dog Show earlier this year.
