More modern weapons could liberate the Donbass region – POLITICO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Sunday that the war in Ukraine could last for years, but a supply of advanced weapons would boost Kyiv’s chances of freeing the eastern Donbass region from Russian control.
“Although the fight in the Donbass is increasingly brutally waged by Russia, Ukrainian soldiers are putting up courageous resistance. With more modern weapons, it is more likely that Ukraine will again be able to drive Putin’s troops out of Donbass,” Stoltenberg told German magazine Bild am Sonntag in an interview published on Sunday.
The NATO chief believes it is impossible to predict when the war will end. “Nobody knows. We have to prepare for the fact that it could take years,” he said. “We must not relax our support for Ukraine, even if the costs are high, not only for the military support but also because of rising energy and food prices. »
His comments come as NATO leaders are due to meet in Madrid later this month to adopt its new « strategic concept », a strategic document outlining the alliance’s missions for the next decade.
Stoltenberg said that under the new strategy, Russia will no longer be seen as a « partner » but as a « threat » to security, peace and stability. The document will also mention China for the first time, the NATO chief said, noting that « the rise of China is a challenge to our interests, our values and our security ».
