Montoyo: Blue Jays target Gausman return on Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said starting pitcher Kevin Gausman isn’t good enough to return on Sunday and the team is aiming to get him back in the lineup on Tuesday.

Gausman has been sidelined since last Saturday due to a bone bruise on his right ankle he suffered when he was hit in a line practice against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gausman, 31, who joined the Blue Jays this season after signing a five-year contract, is 6-6 with a 2.86 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 16 starts.

Sunday’s starting pitcher in the final of a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners is yet to be determined. The Blue Jays have Monday off and return home for a two-game game against the Philadelphia Phillies starting Tuesday.

Montoyo also said the Blue Jays held a players-only meeting during their road trip.

Toronto (45-40) clings to the third and final joker spot just past mid-season. The Blue Jays have cooled considerably by losing seven of their last eight games with the Mariners (43-42), Cleveland Guardians (41-41) and Baltimore Orioles (42-44) close behind.

« The management had the meeting, the doors closed, I think it’s great, » Montoyo said according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.
