Mila Kunis shares how she and Ashton Kutcher managed to ‘overcome’ her health fear

By
Mila Kunis is candid about how she and her family handled Ashton Kutcher’s health scare. ET’s Nischelle Turner sat down with Kunis ahead of the release of her new movie, « Luckiest Girl Alive, » where she opened up about her husband’s battle with a rare form of vasculitis, and how the couple » went through » this scary time.
« So this happened right before COVID, so that was three years ago, » Kunis said of the illness, which made headlines in August, after Kutcher opened up about the autoimmune flare, during an episode of « Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge ».
« I don’t think you have time to sit and talk, you kinda get by, » continued the 39-year-old actress – who shares Wyatt, 8, and Dimitri, 6, with Kutcher. “You’re going to fix whatever health issue comes your way, but you still have kids, you still have a family, you have to live your life. And I think we’re so lucky to have each other, but as far as sitting there and talking about things all the time, no. You must do.
Powering through is a familiar concept to couples. From their fundraising efforts amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to pulling off a reboot of « That ’70s Show, » the pair know how to get the ball rolling. « That ’90s Show, » which is slated to hit Netflix later this year or early next year, sees the couple reunite for a very different look at life in Point Place.
Older and with children of her own, Kunis promised that fans of the original would be « very happy » with the whole series, although she joked that the actor playing her child in the spin-off years 90 was « far too old » to be his.
« First and foremost, my child, without saying too much, on the show, is way too old to be my child, » Kunis joked. « So I was like, ‘What? How are we, teenage parents? So first of all, my child is way too old. I want everyone to know, not possible.
« This kid is too old to be my child, okay, y’all? » I just want to make it very clear,” she added. « I was a child bride! »
Kidding aside, Kunis couldn’t help but rave about the reboot.
« It’s very good, » Kunis said. « It’s awesome actually, and I think anyone who’s ever watched the ’70s, who was a fan, will be very, very, very, very happy with the whole show’s exciting incident. »
Meanwhile, Kunis’ latest project veers to the more serious side, telling the story of TifAni « Ani » FaNelli, a New York woman who seems to have it all, from a sought-after job in a glossy magazine to a dream wedding in Nantucket. But all of that comes under threat when a crime documentary maker interviews her about a « shocking incident » that happened at her prestigious high school when she was a teenager. As a result, Ani is forced to confront the truth about what really happened.
While the Netflix film, based on Jessica Knoll’s novel, sees Ani come to terms with this harrowing past littered with shocking incidents that include a school shooting, sexual assault and bullying that was almost too much to bear, it was easy for Kunis to separate herself from the character once she understood the « why » behind her and the decisions she made.
« I mean, I don’t know if I’m going to sound like a sociopath, but it wasn’t that hard, » Kunis said of portraying some of the toughest moments on screen. of the movie. « I have a very healthy relationship when it comes to acting. I don’t live and breathe when I come home. I’ve always said this: who I am and what I do are two things very different.
« Understanding the why of the character is always the easiest way, » she continued. « And I guess I reversed it, so I was like, ‘How did she end up here?’ These are the incidents that happened. Impossible to control these incidents. You can’t blame for these incidents. You have to forgive yourself for these incidents – this is the movie. So for me to do it, I think I approached it in a weirdly logical way, then let the emotions take over.
“Luckiest Girl Alive” hits Netflix on September 30.
