Mihailovic and Quioto score as CF Montreal beat Whitecaps for 3rd straight win

Djordje Mihailovic and Romell Quioto both scored as CF Montreal held off the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Saturday.

The win extended Montreal’s winning streak (3-3-1) to three games and unbeaten streak to four.

Brian White replied for the visiting Whitecaps (1-5-1).

It also served as CF Montreal’s second home opener with its first game of the season at the Stade Saputo exterior.

Montreal wasted no time, scoring shortly after the opening whistle.

Just after the one minute mark, a perfectly weighed ball over Alistair Johnston’s defense found Mihailovic, who scored from close range.

For the remainder of the half, both teams seemed content with the status quo, trading harmless shots on target and half chances.

Montreal started the second half the same way they started the first, holding off Vancouver. This pressure gave the same result when Mihailovic played against Quioto, who doubled their lead.

It looked like Vancouver pulled one back just after the hour mark through Lucas Cavallini, but the goal was called up when the Canadian was flagged offside.

Whitecaps scored their goal a few minutes later when White pounced on a stray ball in the box, making it 2-1.

Vancouver continued to press, looking for an equalizer and forcing errors from a visibly tired Montreal defense.

In the 93rd minute, it looked like the Whitecaps had snatched a late equalizer through a Tosaint Ricketts header, but the goal was again ruled out due to offside.

Montreal will hit the road again to face the Philadelphia Union on April 23 while Vancouver will visit Austin at Q2 Stadium.
