Mets’ Jacob deGrom throws three scoreless innings in second rehab start

The New York Mets are nearing the end of their starting rotation with two CY Young winners.

On Tuesday, Max Scherzer returned to a big league mound for the first time since May 18 after suffering a left oblique injury against the St. Louis Cardinals. The three-time CY Young winner was brilliant against the Cincinnati Reds, striking out 11 and allowing just two hits in six scoreless innings.

Now Jacob deGrom is closing in on his season debut.

On Friday, deGrom made his second rehab start of the season after suffering a stress reaction in his right shoulder blade during spring training, pitching three scoreless innings for Single-A St. Lucie.

« I felt really good, » deGrom told reporters in Florida, according to the New York Post. “Going out of a game for the first time, getting back into a five-day routine, that was really good. I’m just happy to go out there and be able to get three full runs.

According to MLB.com, deGrom’s fastball peaked at 101 mph, throwing 36 pitches, 29 for strikes while striking out six.

« It’s step by step, but I followed the process as presented and just tried not to overdo it, » deGrom said, according to MLB.com. « Everything is going well. Throwing my first game in a few months [last Sunday], I responded really well and was able to go out there and pitch three innings tonight. I hope I keep going like this and be back in the big leagues before too long. »

New York hopes deGrom will be back on the roster after the all-star break as they try to hold off the Atlanta Braves in Eastern Newfoundland.

« [DeGrom has] has a very good track record of being good, » Mets manager Buck Showalter said before New York’s Friday game against the Miami Marlins. « We’re really looking forward to seeing him back not just as a pitcher, but as a as a member of our team. »
