The 28-year-old athlete could become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the next season. His desire is to remain a member of the Wild, even if the club’s payroll is likely to cause problems.
“If I was worried about it, I would probably be hiding under a rock somewhere,” said Dumba, whose remarks were reported by the TSN network. I heard about the numbers, the space under the ceiling [salarial]. Every year of my career, I’ve been in the trade rumours. »
According to the specialized site CapFriendly, the Wild will have $17.2 million available next year. However, the formation has only 13 skaters with a contract for the 2023-2024 campaign.
Dumba will sign a five-year, $6 million a year contract this season.
No negotiations
At this time, Wild general manager Bill Guerin has no intention of entering into negotiations with Dumba regarding a contract extension.
« We haven’t really talked to each other, » he said. I think it’s not something we need to be distracted with right now. Matt is a big boy and so am I. We both know our situation, but I think the most important thing is that Matt has a clear head for this year and just plays without stress. I can’t say we’re going to start talking or make a deal. »
“As an organization, we are in a unique situation with our space under the ceiling. It is therefore difficult to make certain movements, but you never know.
Dumba seems to appreciate his GM’s frankness.
« Me and Billy have a good relationship, very open and honest, » said the right-back. We haven’t put too much emphasis on that. Things will happen as they can. I will do everything in my power to be the best player and leader I can be on this team. If I do that, I think everything will work out and that’s my goal. »
