A fight that broke out at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday and the ensuing police response led to mass panic and crowd exodus, as well as an early closure of the fairgrounds.

The scuffle took place at Cafe Caribe in the Midway section of the fairgrounds and led to police moving quickly to break it up and using pepper spray, witnesses told FOX 9.

A witness, Ali Jo, told the outlet that she was at Cafe Caribe when she saw a commotion. She said she saw about three people fighting. Jo noticed her eyes starting to burn as people started running. An officer later said police deployed pepper spray.

“A fog blanketed the intersection and you could hear echoes of people coughing and gagging, everyone covering their noses and mouths with their shirts and sweatshirts.” says Joe.

“There was a shift, people were running away, then people started booking from there. It all happened so fast…all I knew was I just wanted to get away from there” , she continued.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots at the fair, although the Minnesota State Fair Police Department did not confirm any details of the incident.

The State Fair said in a statement shortly before 11 p.m. that the fairgrounds “began closing early tonight at approximately 10:20 p.m. due to unrest in the Midway area. There is nothing further to confirm at this time. “.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, thanked law enforcement for their response to the disruption.

“Grateful for the coordinated law enforcement presence at the State Fair,” Walz wrote in a tweet. “Officers are working quickly to get people off the fairgrounds and to respond to reports of violence in the Midway area. We are monitoring the situation and working quickly to restore order.”

Last weekend, the state fair was forced to close rides and cancel a concert after severe storms toppled trees and caused power outages in the Minneapolis area.

Other states have also experienced chaos at their fairs recently.

A fight broke out at the Western Idaho Fair on August 26, resulting in one person being stabbed and another victim of an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound.

That same night, a shooting at a fair in Fayetteville County, Arkansas, injured one person. The suspect had also fled but has since been taken into custody.
