When Jeremiah Masoli went down after a low kick by Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Garrett Marino on Friday night in Regina, the Ottawa Redblacks had to prepare for the worst case scenario.

Masoli, who missed much of the 2019 CFL season with a torn ACL, left the game on crutches. The veteran quarterback had an MRI on Sunday afternoon and the news may not be good, but it really could be worse.

It is believed that the Rouge et Noir will announce on Monday that Masoli suffered a bone injury in his leg, not the ligament. That would mean a much better recovery schedule. Although he will miss several weeks of the season, there is also a chance that he could return to play in 2022.

This means the Redblacks will go ahead in their next game on Saturday at Hamilton, likely using substitute Caleb Evans as a starter. Evans has seen significant playing time in 2021 following injuries to Matt Nichols and Dominique Davis.

The CFL is expected to announce a decision on Marino’s suspension Monday. It will be interesting to see if the Riders react and perhaps come up with their own punishment for a player who is a repeat offender multiple times.
