Mark Hamill returns to his roots.
The legendary ‘Star Wars’ actor, 70, stars in a new ad for Jack in the Box, the fast food company that fired him after a brief stint at one of their establishments in adolescence. Hamill, then an 18-year-old aspiring actor studying at Los Angeles City College, decided to use a goofy clown voice to take orders from customers while working at the drive-thru. His manager did not approve and he was sent packing. However, Hamill’s clown voice returns in the new commercial as Hamill gets another chance to work in the drive-thru. This time he gets the added bonus of surprising unsuspecting customers.

“I worked here when I was a teenager, finally got to work on the window and thought instead of just saying ‘Can I take your order?’ With my usual voice, I was doing a clown voice and they didn’t like it,” Hamill recalled to a Jack in the Box customer. “They didn’t like it at all. called and said ‘do you want to come back for a second chance?’ Of course, shut up! And now I’m back baby. He added, “Second chances are awesome.”

He continued, “I wanted to interact with the audience and loved the idea of speaking for the clown-mouthed speaker.” This “clown-mouthed speaker” would inspire the goofy voice that got him fired. “I thought you should talk like a clown, and I did,” Hamill said. “I thought it was fun – my boss thought it was boring.”

“My boss told me to quit, which I did,” the actor said. “But at the end of the workday he said, ‘You know what Mark, if you can’t take this job seriously, maybe it’s not for you. In other words, leave and never come back.
