Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg pushed back on Wednesday after New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the state’s bail reform laws “crazy” and “dangerous” during a press conference.
“There’s always more work to do,” Bragg conceded on the “FAQ NYC” podcast recorded shortly after the press conference. He said he was “proud of what we do at the Manhattan district attorney’s office,” adding that they work every day to “improve our flawed system.”
Adams had criticized the fact that many crimes in the city are caused by repeat offenders. Of the 2,400 shootings since last year, 716 suspects were behind 30% of them, he said.
Adams was joined by NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, who said “repeat offenders who make New Yorkers suffer unnecessarily” are the problem.

“Every day, as hard-working New Yorkers start their day or night of work or school, or simply to enjoy what this city has to offer, repeat criminals plan or take the opportunity to commit their next robbery, robbery, burglary or other crime,” Sewell said. “Their efforts are increasingly aided by the fact that after their arrest by the NYPD, the criminal justice system fails to hold them accountable for their actions. These offenders face very little, if any, repercussions, though that they have committed crime after crime.”

Sewell noted that New York remains the only state with a law that prevents judges from considering an offender’s potential threat to public safety when making custody decisions.

Bragg said he was encouraged “that homicides are down. Shootings have been down since the start of the year in Manhattan. every day… And so, yes, is there still work to be done? Sure. But we do this work every day. And I think we see in Manhattan the indicators pointing in the right direction.

Bragg has been repeatedly criticized by Adams and the NYPD for his progressive policies.
For example, a one-page memo issued days after he took office earlier this year ordered Manhattan prosecutors not to seek jail terms for a slew of crimes and to reduce charges, including for commercial thefts and burglaries.

It expressly stated that a robbery should be downgraded to petty larceny if brandishing the weapon “does not create a real risk of physical harm”.
