Some Manchester United fans endured a miserable day on and off the pitch on Sunday as fighting broke out among them in the stands at Old Trafford.

On new manager Erik ten Hag’s Premier League debut, the Red Devils fell 2-0 behind Brighton in the first half on matchday one of the season thanks to a Pascal Gross brace.

United eventually lost 2-1 after failing to capitalize on an Alexis Mac Allister own goal that gave them hope in the second half.

With stress and tension running high in a fan base accustomed to glory but who have not seen their team lift a piece of silverware in five years, a fight broke out in one of the stands of the » Theater of Dreams ».

Videos and photos that have been circulating on social media show two men in a heated and jostling exchange.

In the blink of an eye, one of the men also appears to have his hand around his rival’s throat.

Fans in the seating section below then had to step in to try to get the line out, according to the Daily Mail, and others watched in horror.

Ahead of the 2-1 loss where Cristiano Ronaldo came on in the second half, Erik ten Hag called on United fans to make a difference in their fate to win a first Premier League title since 2013.

“If we bring a commitment, I think they [the fans] will love it and they will bring the fight back », remarked the former Ajax boss.

« I think the stadium is meant to bring combat and cooperation, » he added, though his call to arms seems to have been taken too literally by some who failed to master their passion.

With United already off to the worst possible start, the Red Devils next play at Brentford on Saturday where Ronaldo could still warm up the bench, as separate comments from Ten Hag conveyed once Brighton’s line-up was made public.

« Cristiano Ronaldo is working very hard to reach the right level of fitness, it will take time, » the already under pressure coach revealed, as reported by BBC Sports.

« He started pre-season last week…so it depends on how fast he progresses, » Ten Hag also added, depending on when the Portuguese could expect to become starters again.

According to club legend Wayne Rooney, however, United should cut their losses with Ronaldo and let him go for Ten Hag to build a successful squad.
