DETROIT (AP) — Lucas Raymond scored his first two goals of the season, Ville Husso made 30 saves and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 on Saturday night to end a two-game losing streak .
Raymond finally broke through in Game 8 of the season after scoring 23 times last season as a rookie.
« It feels good, » Raymond said. « Of course I feel like I could have had one in previous games too. It was good that I finally got it today. I feel like we could have had many more goals today.
Raymond broke the powerplay tie with 4.3 seconds left in the second period. Racing into the crease with the puck, he managed to wedge it between the legs of goaltender Filp Gustavsson before falling into the goalie.
« Raymond kinda likes it, but it hits my back leg and it goes in, » Gustavsson said. « It’s super frustrating, especially with so little time on the clock. »
Raymond has five goals in three career games against Minnesota.
Kirill Kaprizov opened the scoring for the Wild at 1:28 of the first period on the second shot of the game. Coming in on a 2-on-1, Karpizov used Jared Spurgeon as a decoy and landed a high wrist shot under the crossbar behind Ville Husso.
« I think it probably hurt us coming out so quickly, » Wild coach Dean Evason said. “We had about four chances straight away and it looked like we thought we could keep doing that.
« We thought we were just going to play as a qualified hockey club and it’s not working. We are about skill and courage. We can’t beat teams by being cute.
Raymond tied it with 3:09 left in the first. He fired a wrist shot from the bottom edge of the face-off circle right past Gustavsson on the blocker side.
Detroit coach Derek Lalonde liked the way Raymond played as much as the number of times he scored.
« You didn’t see the closure, you didn’t see the poaching for the offense, you didn’t see the hope, » Lalonde said. « He played the game well. He put himself in good situations and obviously it came back tonight.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, Raymond’s center, felt it was only a matter of time before his teammate started scoring.
« Whether the puck comes in or not, we get chances, » Larkin said. “He put himself in good positions to receive the puck and he has a quick clearance. It was easy to find him tonight.
Husso improved to 3-1-1. Gustavsson made 23 saves falling to 0-3.
The Wild lost in regulation for the first time on their five-game trip. Minnesota is 2-1-1 on the trip. After opening the season with straight wins, Detroit went 1-2-2 in the five games heading into Saturday.
