British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has been chosen to lead the Conservative Party and become the new Prime Minister.

The winner of the two-month race between Truss and former finance minister Rishi Sunak was announced on Monday by Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchers.

Speaking after his election announcement, Truss praised his predecessor and former boss, Boris Johnson.

« Boris, you did Brexit, you got crushed [former Labour leader] Jeremy Corbyn, you deployed the vaccine and you resisted [Russian President] Vladimir Poutine, » she said, summarizing her accomplishments. « You are admired from kyiv to Cole Island. »

As the new leader of government, Truss pledged to continue delivering on the commitments that won the Conservatives in the 2019 general election. She promised to cut taxes, tackle energy shortages and improve the national health service.


« We will deliver, we will deliver, we will deliver » she pointed to thunderous applause. “And we will deliver a big win for the Conservative Party in 2024.”

Johnson announced his resignation on July 7 after a series of high-profile scandals and ministerial resignations.
