I sincerely hope that Danielle Smith doesn’t think she has a term as the new premier or even that she’s some sort of representative of Alberta.

In the leadership race, 84,593 UCP members voted. She was elected by a margin of 53.8%, which means that 45,511 people voted for her. Our current provincial population is approximately 4,543,000, which means that our current premier was elected by roughly exactly one percent of our population.

If she truly cares about Alberta rather than her own ideas, which polls show are not popular with the majority of Albertans, she will call a general election or, if that is not possible under our current rules, she will wait for the May 2023 election to see whether or not she has a real mandate for the changes she is proposing.
