Judge’s decision to overturn mask warrant sparks mid-air cheers among flyers

Airline cabins erupted in applause as jubilant pilots informed passengers they were free to remove their face coverings shortly after a federal judge in Florida overturned the airline’s mask mandate. Biden administration for planes, trains and buses.

Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, appointed by President Donald Trump, ruled Monday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention failed to adequately explain its decision to impose the mandate or follow proper rule-making procedures.

Pilots wasted no time in letting pandemic-weary passengers know via intercoms that they could take off their masks – sparking giddy celebrations in the cabins, Newsweek reported.

KSAZ-TV reporter Erica Stapleton posted a video to Twitter in which Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” is heard playing on the speakerphone.

“When you’re actually on a flight and they tell you the federal mask mandate is lifted for travelers. Lots of cheers from the passengers on board,” Stapleton wrote: Monday evening.

Ben Dietderich, press secretary for Republican Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, posted a short clip of passengers applauding a similar announcement from the cockpit.

“A wonderful moment in full flight on @alaskaair today!” he wrote.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking. This is the most important announcement I have ever made. The mandate of the federal mask is over. Take off your mask if you wish! ‘” Dietderich quotes the pilot as saying.

Passenger Rennie Cook posted a picture of another beaming pilot.

“They just announced on my flight that the mask mandate for flights is over!” he said in a tweet.

Passenger Logan Krengel posted a selfie aboard a flight from Las Vegas to Minneapolis.

“The only time I cheered on a plane. Cheers! Life is good!” he wrote, using the username @DocBartender.

Another passenger, Martin Avila, tweeted that a “flight attendant just paused with tears announcing that masks are optional. His counterpart approached him and said, “It’s been two years, it’s going to come out.”

However, some people took issue with the decision that travelers can ditch their masks.

Scott Hechinger, a civil rights attorney, was traveling from Florida to the Big Apple on Monday when the judge’s decision was announced.

“The decision is stupid and absurd. And the determining result. And it’s outrageous that a single judge in a state can craft a national health policy,” he said in a tweet.

“But I am currently dealing with the immediate impact of the decision. So not really in the mood for more,” Hechinger added.

He told Insider in an email that he found the decision “all the more outrageous as it comes at a time when a new variant is raging and so many people, including friends and colleagues , along with their young children, are extremely ill.”

Hechinger added: “I don’t feel safe.”

Walt Ecton, Assistant Professor of Educational Policy, describe his “very bizarre moment: on a plane, the pilot turns on the intercom, announces that the mandate of the federal mask is over, ‘so take off your masks and celebrate!’”

He wrote that “Half the plane is clapping/tapping in the fives. The other half simmers, keeping the masks. A person near me starts crying, clearly worried.

Meanwhile, Saskia Popescu, professor of biodefense at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, argued that masking is important in enclosed spaces for long periods of time amid an increase in cases of COVID-19.

“We might want to be done with COVID, but forcing our way is myopic and downright ridiculous,” she wrote.

“People are still getting sick, going to hospital and dying. We need primary prevention, like masks + vaccines. Personally, I will continue to wear a mask on planes & [public transportation]added Popescu.

On Monday evening, the Biden administration confirmed that travelers can ditch their masks pending a reconsideration of the decision.

“Agencies are reviewing the decision and assessing potential next steps. In the meantime, today’s court ruling means the CDC’s public transportation masking order is not in effect at this time,” an administration official said.

“As a result, the TSA will not be enforcing its safety guidelines and emergency amendment requiring the use of masks on public transportation and transportation hubs at this time. The CDC recommends people continue to wear masks on indoor public transportation. »

Almost immediately, Alaska Airlines announced that masks would be optional for travelers and employees.

United Airlines quickly followed suit, announcing that masks were no longer required on domestic flights and some international flights, depending on the requirements of the country of arrival.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines or Southwest Airlines – the three carriers with the most passengers before the pandemic – also made masks optional on Monday evening.

CEOs of all major airlines last month called on the Biden administration to drop the mask mandate because the requirement did not reflect the current environment.
