‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Johnny Depp testified Tuesday in his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 35, for $50 million over an op-ed the “Aquaman” actress wrote for the Washington Post alleging she was the victim of domestic violence. Heard never identified Depp directly in the trial, but Depp’s attorneys said his allegations had a negative impact on Depp’s career and his relationship with his family.

Depp described a “tentative” six-year relationship with his ex-wife, to whom he was married between 2015 and 2017.

“About six years ago Ms. Heard … committed these disturbing criminal acts against me that were not based on any kind of truth,” Depp said, his hair pulled back into a ponytail. “It was a complete shock. There was just no need to go in that direction.”

Depp continued to claim he had never hit a woman and pushed back against allegations of a substance abuse problem – two details the defense used in their case against Depp.

“It’s been six years of tough times,” Depp said. “It’s very strange when one day you’re a Cinderella, so to speak, then in 0.6 seconds you’re Quasimodo. I didn’t deserve that, neither my children, nor the people who believed in me all these years .”

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star said it was difficult for him to reveal the intimate details of his life in public but necessary, saying he was “obsessed with the truth”.

Early in their relationship, Depp said, Heard seemed “too good to be true.”

“She was caring, she loved, she was smart, she was kind, she was funny, she understood. We had a lot in common,” he said, adding, “It was amazing.”

Heard would apparently sit him on the couch when he walked through the door to work, give him a glass of wine, and take off his boots.

“I have never experienced anything like this in my life,” he recalls. But within a year and a half, he says, “she had become a different person.”

Both sides have accused each other of abuse, though Heard has yet to take a stand herself.

Photographic evidence presented by Depp’s lawyers on Tuesday also shows he brushed up against the actor. Security guard Sean Bett testified Monday afternoon that he took photos of Depp after Heard allegedly assaulted him repeatedly, leaving scratches and bruises on his face.

He told the jury he insisted on taking the photos “as evidence in case Ms Heard tried to make any allegations against Depp”. He also testified that it’s possible Heard may have had bruises on herself even though he didn’t see it personally.

Hearing attorney Benjamin Rottenborn said last week that the actress would speak later in the trial and detail the “graphic and horrifying terms” of her marriage to Depp. He mentioned an alleged abuse case in which Depp “kicked” Heard in the back of a private jet, calling the actor a “revenge-obsessed husband.”

The attorney also told the jury, “You’re going to see who the real Johnny Depp is – behind the fame, behind the pirate costumes. Because Johnny Depp carried this case, it’s all going to come out.”

Hearing attorney Elaine Bredehoft also previewed graphic abuse allegations against Depp during her opening statements last week. Bredehoft described various abuse allegations beginning in 2015 and ending before their marriage ended in 2017, involving the actor who allegedly ‘kicked’, ‘punched’ and threw objects at Heard . The attorney also described Depp as “delusional” and “paranoid”, saying he was drinking and doing drugs before he allegedly “assaulted” Heard on multiple occasions.

She said video and photographic evidence of the alleged abuse will be shown to the jury during the trial.

Heard’s legal team also argues that Heard’s decision to publish an op-ed in The Washington Post portraying himself as a victim of abuse, without naming Depp, was within his First Amendment rights.
