Italian centre-left leader Enrico Letta to step down after election defeat – POLITICO
The leader of Italy’s main opposition party, Enrico Letta, announced on Monday that he would step down following the defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Addressing his supporters from Democratic Party headquarters, Letta said he would stay for the time being, but would not attend the next party convention. It is not known when the congress will take place.
Letta, who served as prime minister in 2013-14, said it was a « sad day for Italy and Europe ».
« The Italians have chosen, a clear and marked choice, the country will have a right-wing government, » he added.
The centre-left party came second in the polls with 19% of the vote. A coalition of right-wing parties led by Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party won with 44%.
Meloni is set to lead Italy’s most right-wing government since World War II.
