Internet down in Ottawa and across Canada: Rogers customers report massive outage

Rogers customers reported a loss of cellular service and internet access early Friday morning.

Self-reporting tools like Downdetector have recorded more than 20,000 reports nationally, but concentrated in southern Ontario and Quebec, including the Ottawa area where at least 3,000 reports have been accounted for and started pouring in at 5am.
Ottawa police issued a warning on Twitter. « We acknowledge that Rogers nNetwork customers are experiencing a Canada-wide outage affecting cellular and internet services,” the service wrote. « Some people may have problems connecting with 9-1-1. If your call fails, please try again or call from a landline or cell phone with another provider. »

Rogers released a public message about the outage just before 9 a.m., but did not provide any information about the cause of the outage or its duration. Its customer service tools also appeared not to work on Friday morning.
« We know how important it is for our customers to stay connected, » said the RogersHelps Twitter account. “We are aware of the issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully committed to resolving the issue as soon as possible. We will continue to update you as we have more information to share.
The hashtag #internetdown was trending on Twitter in Canada. Users have reported issues with debit machines, cell phones, cable TV and home internet.
