India’s GDP jumps as consumer spending picks up, Covid fears ebb


NEW DELHI – India’s economy grew 13.5% in the April-June quarter from a year earlier as coronavirus concerns eased and allowed consumer spending to pick up , but economists are seeing signs that pent-up demand could start to decline.

Gross domestic product released Wednesday, which showed growth for India’s fiscal first quarter, benefited from a comparison with a year earlier, when the economy came to a virtual standstill amid a devastating wave of coronavirus hit the country.
