The ‘Luther’ actor, 49, is said to be quite ready to pursue « his own film franchise », although he has apparently suggested other suitable 007s to producer Barbara Broccoli.

A source told The Sun on Monday night: “The fans and Barbara wanted Idris but he wants to create something for himself.

« However, he came up with names to play 007.

« He’s ‘unofficially’ in the decision-making process because he’s been in talks with producers for so long. »

Daniel, 54, quit after his fifth Bond outing in ‘No Time To Die’ last year, with Barbara later saying Idris was considering taking over as spy, hailing him ‘a magnificent actor’ .

With Idris out of the running, 39-year-old Henry Cavill and 34-year-old Rege-Jean Page are 4/1 bookies favourites.

They are still ahead despite a movie insider earlier this month saying the new James Bond must be under 40 and taller than 5ft 10in.

A source told the Daily Star on August 8 that Eon Productions was looking for a « new face » replacement for Daniel.

They added that bringing in an actor in his late thirties would allow him to stay in the role for at least a decade or potentially three movies.

The source also claimed that filming for the next film could begin in the winter of 2023, but Craig’s successor won’t be revealed until next fall at the earliest.

Eon Productions’ under-40 casting ‘rule’ meant that bookies and fan favorites such as Idris, Henry and Regé-Jean – as well as 44-year-old Tom Hardy – would have been excluded.

Richard Madden, 36, and James Norton, 37, would now be in pole position, with the alleged height requirement of 5ft 10 also excluding Taron Egerton, 32, John Boyega, 30 and Kit Harington, 35.
