Hurricane Fiona intensified into a Category 4 storm on Wednesday as it moved north through Puerto Rico, where it triggered catastrophic flooding, and hit the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands with heavy rains .

The storm, the first major in the Atlantic Ocean this year, strengthened as it moved away from the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The National Hurricane Center said Fiona was approaching Bermuda with winds near 130 miles per hour. Forecasters said the storm would continue to strengthen on Wednesday before possibly weakening this weekend.
