This latest get-rich-quick program leverages the New York Citizens Air Complaint program launched in 2019 by the New York Department of Environmental Protection, which offers ordinary citizens financial incentives to help report emissions violations in the whole city, CNBC reported.
To do their part in reducing smog, citizens simply take video of a truck idling for more than three minutes – a violation in New York.
They then upload the incriminating clip to the Idling Complaint System website, after which they can collect “25% of the ticket once paid,” Will explains in the video.
Fines for first-time offenders are $350, which means broadcast vigilantes can earn $87.50 in « just 3 minutes, » according to the clip. In fact, Will describes the case of an 81-year-old New York tipster named Paul Slapikas who claims to have won $64,000 this way.
Environmental agencies consider the initiative important given that emissions from idling gasoline and diesel vehicles can cause a variety of health problems, including asthma, respiratory problems and cardiovascular problems, CNBC reported.
