Homicide squad investigates shooting in Whistler Village

Emergency responders were at the scene at the mountain resort in Whistler, British Columbia, on Sunday after passers-by reported hearing gunfire.
In a statement Sunday afternoon, Whistler RCMP said police responded to a report of shots being fired at a local hotel around 12:19 p.m.
« Although this matter is very serious and the investigation is in its infancy, we can say that there is no ongoing risk to public safety, » said Cpl. Angelar Kermer of the Sea to Sky RCMP.
Kermer said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been engaged with local investigators and other units are also helping. Police have not yet said how many people were shot.
A police tape and a paramedic were seen in Whistler Village outside Showcase Snowboards in Sundial Crescent on Sunday afternoon.
An area of the storefront was cordoned off, with emergency responders on site. People took refuge in nearby businesses after unconfirmed reports of a shooting spread on social media.
The owner of a Whistler Village grocery store told CBC News he was keeping his doors closed as a precaution on Sunday afternoon, with another business owner saying a small area was cordoned off by police earlier on Sunday .
Whistler Blackcomb closed for the day
Activities in the popular tourist destination, located 120 kilometers north of Vancouver, were halted after the shooting was reported.
“The RCMP have officially cleared the Whistler area of any imminent danger,” Whistler Blackcomb Operations said in a tweet at 3 p.m.
“Out of respect for everyone involved, as well as our guests and team members, we will be closing Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the day, effective immediately.”
RCMP say they will share more information as it becomes available and have asked witnesses or anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Whistler Detachment at 604-932-3044.
