Dr. Tom Kelly is a surgeon in trauma, and everywhere, he sees doctors drowning in administrative work. He wanted change, so he decided to build it.

“We wanted to build an AI care partner to be held alongside clinicians and would take care of the administrator so that individual suppliers, like me, be able to feel empowered to provide the care we have devoted to our lives,” he told Techcrunch.

Dr. Kelly teamed up with Waleed Mussa, with whom he had worked in a previous startup, and founded Heidi Health in 2021. The company began to launch products in early 2024.

In just 18 months, he said, the company returned more than “18 million hours to health care providers of more than 70 million patient visits to 116 countries”.

The product, as promised, is a medical scribe of the AI who takes care of all the administration works that trace doctors. It can transcribe and dictate notes, generate personalized summaries of patients and even follow the tasks so that doctors no longer need sticky notes.

Heidi has both built its own AI model and is based on other models, such as Gemini. “This model agency approach means that we can optimize our precision, latency and cost,” he said.

On Monday, the company announced a series B of $ 65 million led by Steve Cohen’s Point72. He also announced a new tool: an AI agent who calls patients on behalf of the doctor. Microsoft’s former chief doctor, Dr. Simon Kos, also arrives on board, as well as Plaid’s income chief Paul Williamson.

The company has raised $ 96.6 million to date. The others in circles include Goodwater Capital, the head, Blackbird VC, LG Technology Ventures and Alumni Ventures.

“They had already seen all the scribes,” said Dr. Kelly about Point72. “They had never seen the adoption of products and the measures of use as they had seen in Heidi. They also liked that we were obsessed with the end user experience, because they saw that most of our competitors only made descending sales. ”

Fresh capital will be used to help the development of products.

Dr. Kelly hopes that giving doctors more access to the tools of AI will widen the capacities of clinicians and will remove the “chore” of their work.

He said most conversations in the medical world at the moment are shaped by what is happening in developed countries, “but imagine a world where any health care provider can use Heidi to increase its clinical capacity, where they can practice in a war zone, or a refugee camp, or a region struck by climate change or simply a subservient community,” he continued. “Heidi can help them achieve more patients and provide better health care results.”

AI transforms health technology. Others in the space of medical scribe, in particular, include depth, the Healthcare and Abridge atmosphere.

Heidi said it works with more than 2 million clinicians per week, ranging from hospitals to individual practices. It has a free version of the product with paid features, which, according to Dr. Kelly, was a good lure for new customers.

He said that AI will naturally change everything in health care. But at the base, humanity is always very essential, especially with regard to the maintenance and construction of confidence.

“It is a question of doubling the capacity of health care in the world. This is the real promise of AI,” he said. “We want to provoke it.”
