Germany shoots down Poland’s missile proposal — RT World News

US-made Patriot systems cannot be donated to Ukraine because they are intended for use on NATO territory, the defense minister said.

Germany has rejected Poland’s appeal to deliver its US-made MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine. The refusal came after Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak demanded that the weapon Berlin had offered to Warsaw be supplied to kyiv and deployed in the western part of the country near the Ukrainian-Polish border.

“These Patriots are part of NATO’s integrated air defense, that is, they are intended for deployment on NATO territory,” German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said Thursday.

“Any use outside of NATO territory would require prior discussions with NATO and allies,” she stated.

Germany has offered to strengthen Poland’s defenses after a missile fell in the east of the country last week, killing two people. Ukrainian officials and some Western media initially claimed he was fired by Russia. However, Polish President Andrzej Duda later said it was likely launched by Ukrainian Air Defense Forces and veered off course trying to fend off a Russian attack.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of Poland’s conservative ruling Law and Justice Party and former prime minister, told the PAP news agency on Wednesday that it would be better for Poland’s security if “Germany handed over the [Patriot] equipment to the Ukrainians, trained Ukrainian crews with a provision that the batteries would be stationed in western Ukraine. His comments came as he campaigned for next year’s parliamentary elections.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Thursday that recent civilian casualties in kyiv were caused by the work of Ukrainian air defense weapons, including those supplied by the West. The New York Times, meanwhile, recently reported that in September, an American-made HARM anti-radar missile fired by a Ukrainian aircraft likely derailed and hit a residential building in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, injuring three people.
