Florida man rescued by helicopter after losing two days in forest

A Florida man has been hoisted to safety on a helicopter after falling out of a canoe and becoming hopelessly lost in dense forest for two days, authorities said.

Davidson Anjab, 39, was on a canoe with two buddies near Altoona on Sunday when it suddenly capsized and the trio fell into the water, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

While his friends were able to pull up, Anjab was unable to make it to the canoe and instead swam to a nearby shore. He shouted to his friends that he would meet them at their launch point.

But Anjab never returned and got lost in thick forest, officials said.

The sheriff’s office launched a search operation of Anjab which included K-9 and helicopter units as well as a “mounted party”.

After approximately 40 hours in the punishing wilderness, Anjab was located by police units who called in a helicopter from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit to haul him out of the remote area.

Video of the operation shows Anjab and several officers waving to the helicopter crew before a rescuer descends, straps the injured man and lifts him to safety.

“He was transported to an area hospital where he will receive fluids and medical attention as he recovers from spending approximately 40 hours in this environment,” the department said in a statement.
