Five-year contract extension for Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Right-hander Luis Castillo agreed to a five-year extension with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

ESPN has advanced the amount of $108M for the pact.

Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on July 29, Castillo is 3-2 and has a 2.83 average with his new club.

In nine starts with Seattle, Castillo struck out 64 and allowed 13 walks.

His overall record in 2022 is 7-6, with an average of 2.85.

The 29-year-old Dominican has been a star player in 2019 and this year.

The agreement covers from 2023 to 2027, with an option for 2028.

« Luis is a strong and dynamic gunner who has shown his reliability, » said Jerry Dipoto, president of baseball operations for the Mariners. His arrival with us is an important part of our efforts to build a champion club.

The Mariners, Blue Jays and Rays are on their way to the playoffs without being sectional champions in the American.
