Five things to watch in the Canadian business world in the week ahead

TORONTO — Five things to watch in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Technical Conference

The Collision Technology Conference will take place in Toronto starting Monday. The conference will mark a return to the in-person event after being forced to move online when COVID-19 began to spread in 2020.

Retail sales

Statistics Canada will release its April retail sales figures on Tuesday. Total retail sales in Canada hit $60.1 billion in March, virtually unchanged from the previous month, as a drop in new car sales offset healthy consumer spending gains elsewhere.

Inflation report

Statistics Canada will release its consumer price index for the month of May on Wednesday. Last month’s inflation report showed an annual inflation rate of 6.8%, its highest level since January 1991, when it hit 6.9%.

Empire Results

Empire Company Ltd. will release its fourth quarter results before the start of trading on Wednesday and hold a conference call with financial analysts. The grocer announced a new partnership earlier this month to join the Scene+ rewards program operated by Cineplex Inc. and Scotiabank.

Blackberry

BlackBerry Ltd. will hold its annual meeting of shareholders on Wednesday. The company will also release its first quarter results and hold a conference call with analysts on Thursday.
