NAUJAAT, Nunavut – Two investigators from the Nunavut Office of the Fire Marshal have arrived in Naujaat on Hudson’s Bay to investigate a fire that destroyed the community center in the hamlet.

Videos and photos posted to social media show flames rising into the sky as the blaze – which RCMP say started late Friday evening – lasted until Saturday morning.

RCMP Corporal. Sean French says the center was destroyed.

No one was hurt, French says, although he says a firefighter was briefly treated for smoke inhalation.

French says the blaze burned so intensely that some nearby homes and the health center were evacuated as a precaution, and at one point the power went out for about an hour early Saturday.

Naujaat, formerly known as Repulse Bay, has a population of around 1,100.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on October 9, 2022.
