Fire destroys communal building at Saint Andrews campsite

A building at Saint Andrews Campground was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning, leaving only piles of blackened rubble behind.

Fire Chief Kevin Theriault said the call came in around 7 a.m. and when the first team arrived on the scene, the kitchen shelter at the Oceanfront campground was ablaze.

He said the crew’s first point of attack was the large propane tank next to the building. He said they made sure the tank didn’t overheat, then started lighting the fire.

Thériault said it took about an hour to extinguish the fire.

The campground is operated by the Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews and is an important source of revenue for the club. Theriault said a lot of electrical equipment was stored in the building.

« It’s a big hit for the campground, that’s for sure, » he said.

Theriault said the investigation, starting with where the fire started, will be handled by the RCMP and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
