Fatal fire in the Mansonville sector, in Potton, in the Eastern Townships: the SQ is investigating

QUEBEC — The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is investigating a fatal fire that occurred in the past few hours in Estrie.

Firefighters were called around 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning to the scene of a commercial building that housed a garage and an apartment on Airport Road in the Mansonville area of ​​Potton.

« When the fire was brought under control, the body of a person was discovered by the fire department, » said Sergeant Catherine Bernard, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

It was impossible to say immediately whether it was the body of a man or a woman, or even a tenant of the premises.

« The identification of the victim must be made to the satisfaction of the coroner, » said the spokesperson for the SQ.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, as is the cause of death. A security perimeter was erected around the building, where a fire scene technician from the SQ was expected to determine the cause and the circumstances surrounding the event.

“As there was a death, it is the Major Crimes Investigation Division of the Sûreté du Québec which is responsible for the investigation,” said Sergeant Bernard.

The SQ investigation is continuing.
