Explosion outside the Russian Embassy in Kabul; reported casualties

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said an explosion occurred outside the Russian embassy in Kabul, the Afghan capital.

The agency, citing unnamed sources, says the explosion occurred on Monday when a Russian diplomat walked out to people waiting outside to call out the names of visa applicants.

The report says there were between 15 and 20 casualties, but does not differentiate between dead and injured. The agency did not say whether Russian diplomats were among the victims.

The Taliban did not immediately confirm the explosion or give casualty figures.
