England striker Wayne Rooney agrees to lead DC United

Wayne Rooney is back in MLS but will act as DC United head coach this time around, the Associated Press has learned.
The person confided under the seal of anonymity on Sunday, since the announcement is not yet official.
The longtime star striker played for the club in the US capital in 2018 and 2019. Once he has obtained the necessary accreditations and his visa, Rooney will replace interim head coach Chad Ashton, who took the helm himself this season when Hernan Losada was fired.
DC United is tied for last in the Garber Tour with the Chicago Fire. The 5-10-2 club is recovering from a 7-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union on Friday. The loss equaled the record for the biggest goal spread in an MLS game.
Rooney, 36, shone for Manchester United in the Premier League between 2004 and 2017 and is England’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Rooney resigned from English club Derby last month after 18 months as a driver. His return to DC United was first mentioned by The Washington Post.
