A surfer was arrested on Thursday following the publication of a bloody image targeting the caquiste deputy of Chauveau, Sylvain Lévesque, revealed the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on Saturday morning.

Police said they arrested the suspect, a 44-year-old man, at his home in Sainte-Béatrix. The man has since been released pending his return to court, scheduled for September 29.

« The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions will determine the charge or charges that will be filed against the suspect, » said the SQ.

Mr. Lévesque had revealed that he had complained to the police on Thursday morning, after the publication of a doctored image of his election poster on social networks. This one showing blood dripping from the poster, with the mention “Who voted AGAINST an independent investigation into the atrocities that occurred in CHSLDs in 2020”.

Everything was accompanied by contact details to reach the outgoing MP.

“This kind of publication is unacceptable. We can be against ideas, but violence and intimidation will never be tolerated. Despite this, nothing will prevent me from going to meet the citizens of #Chauveau!”, replied Sylvain Lévesque on Twitter.

Online violence and the safety of politicians on the ground have been top concerns over the past week. In particular, another Internet user was also arrested in the last few days after threatening the liberal Marwah Rizqy with death, while the constituency office of the liberal deputy Enrico Ciccone was robbed and vandalized on Wednesday.
