Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw lands on injured reserve after leaving Thursday’s game with lower back pain

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw was placed on the disabled list Friday with a lower back injury.

Kershaw left Thursday’s game against the San Francisco Giants as he warmed up before the fifth inning. Just before leaving the match, he was seen saying to the coaches: « My back ».

Kershaw, 34, has been hampered by injuries over the past few years. He hasn’t made 30 starts since the 2015 season.

It’s now his 11th career stint in IL, all since 2014, and it’s his second this year. Both stints in IL were due to back injuries.

Despite the injuries, the three-time Cy Young Award winner is posting similar numbers to previous years during his stellar career. He has a 2.64 ERA with a .98 WHIP and 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings. For his career, he has a 2.49 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

DODGERS PLACE CLAYTON KERSHAW ON INFLAMMATION INJURED LIST

He also won two perfect games in the eighth inning this year. The first time came on his season debut, but he was pulled after the seventh inning by manager Dave Roberts due to a strict pitch count to guard against injury.

Kershaw was named an All-Star for the ninth time this summer and started the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium. It was his first starting nod in the Midsummer Classic.
