Department of Labor proposes changes to independent contractor rules

The Labor Department said it will review rules that designate whether workers are classified as employees or independent contractors, a decision that could affect millions of contract and contract workers in health care, restaurants, ride-sharing and many other industries.

The department released a proposed rule on Tuesday that would change how labor laws define independent contractors. The new rule, if approved, would rely on a « multi-factor economic reality test » to determine whether a worker is truly in business on their own and in control of certain aspects of their job, such as whether they perform management, how it is supervised and whether it is able to set prices.
