Denis Shapovalov loses to Andrey Rublev in five sets at US Open

NEW YORK – Andrey Rublev won the final point of a match that lasted over four hours and beat No. 19 Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-4, 7 -6 (10-Sept).

Rublev, seeded ninth, is set to face No. 7 Cameron Norrie in the fourth round.

Rublev only hit 38 winners and had nine aces against Shapovalov’s 76 winners who had 23 aces. Rublev needed five match points to ultimately win the match. The Russian collapsed to the ground and buried his face in his hands in exhaustion as the crowd in the stands went wild after one of the best games of the tournament’s first week.

Rublev advanced to the US Open quarter-finals in 2017 and 2020 and also lost in the fourth round in 2019.
