Delhi CM Rekha Gupta slapped and assaulted at home; Police charge accused with attempted murder

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday, August 20, morning during a Jan Sunwai program at her residence. The man was arrested by police and charged with “attempted murder” under the BNS.

The man who allegedly slapped and assaulted CM Gupta has been identified as Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, 41, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. He was arrested by the Delhi Police and taken into custody.

A joint team of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Special Cell of Delhi Police is investigating the case and trying to find out the motive behind the attack, according to senior police officials, news agency PTI reported.

Police have charged the man with attempted murder under section 109(1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“We are conducting joint interrogation with the IB, special cell and intelligence agencies. He has had five criminal cases, including two assault cases involving a knife attack and three under the Excise Act,” the official said, according to PTI.

The man was taken into police custody for five days on Thursday August 21.

Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva condemned Gupta’s attack.

“An incident took place during Jan Sunvai at CM residence, Civil Lines. Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva strongly condemns the attack on CM Rekha Gupta during Jan Sunvai weekly. Police investigating to reveal details,” Delhi BJP said in a statement, news agency ANI reported.

The man had breached security and slapped Gupta, News18 reported citing sources. He also used abusive words and tried to beat her when Gupta allegedly tripped and fell.

“One person was apprehended and taken to Civil Lines Police Station in connection with the attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta during Jan Sunvai at the CM residence,” Delhi Police said, according to ANI.

The Interior Ministry will be informed of the attack, according to News18.

“It’s very unfortunate. CM rules the whole of Delhi, and I think the more such incidents are condemned, the less they are condemned. But this incident also highlights the safety of women. If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?” » Delhi Congress leader Devender Yadav told ANI.

After the incident, CM Gupta underwent medical tests and is under surveillance.
