Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was granted ‘Z’ category security by the central government on Thursday, August 21.

The decision comes a day after Gupta was slapped and assaulted by a man at her home during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ show.

The chief minister, along with her official residence and camp office on Raj Niwas Marg in New Delhi’s Civil Lines, would also be secured by the VIP Security Group (VSG) of the paramilitary force, news agency PTI reported.

Following the instructions of the Union Home Ministry, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) took charge of Gupta’s security on August 21. At least 22-25 CRPF commandos would still be in service under the new security directive.

What is it about?

Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man, later identified as Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, 41, resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. The accused allegedly hurled abuses, slapped, tried to pull Gupta’s hair and thrashed her as she fell under the assault. The man reportedly spotted Gupta’s residence a day earlier.

He was arrested by the Delhi Police and charged with attempt to murder under section 109 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He is in police custody for five days.

A joint team of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Special Cell of Delhi Police is investigating the case and trying to find out the motive behind the attack, PTI reported.

What is Category Z security?

Under the central protection list, VIP security coverage starts from the highest Z plus, Z, Y plus, Y and X categories.

This is one of the highest levels of security available to those considered to pose a significant risk. It involves high-level protections through the deployment of security gadgets and including personal security guards as well as escorts, armed guards and surveillance personnel.

Category ā€œZā€ security is granted to individuals of public prominence, such as political leaders, government officials, and notable public figures.
