Dan Rather educated himself on Twitter to wonder ‘what’s going on’ with CNN: ‘Gone full MAGA’

Twitter users swarmed disgraced former CBS anchor Dan Rather’s tweet, which expressed confusion over the recent change in tone in CNN reporting.

The liberal journalist and commentator tweeted that something was “up” on the network on Friday and generated an outpouring of concern from liberals (and mockery from conservatives) that the network was abandoning partisan politics in its reporting.

Perhaps they instead noticed, like many other liberals on Twitter, the two CNN reporters who chastised Biden’s “MAGA Republican” political speech for employing US Marines in his presentation.

For many liberals, it was another concrete sign that CNN had begun to move away from the left-leaning partisan politics the network’s new boss was seeking.

The firing last month of partisan anchor Brian Stelter and Friday’s departure of liberal CNN White House correspondent John Harwood likely also contributed to this impression.

Presumably noticing all these developments, Rather tweeted on Friday, “What’s going on at CNN? This is a serious question. There’s a lot of speculation about guidelines and motives. What’s really going on And do the public notice it?

Users on both sides of the political aisle were quick to react.

“It’s a long story, but the new president is here to chop off liberal heads. It’s no coincidence that two ambitious people on air tweeted the same GOP talking points about Biden and the Marines. That’s the background of the new hatchet man – he tried the same thing on MSNBC,” wrote liberal commentator and former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann.

Conservative talk show host Joe Pagliarulo mocked Plutot, tweeting, “Dan Plutot thinks CNN has an audience. That’s cute, Dan.”

Ameshia Cross, a Democratic political analyst for talk radio, seemed frustrated with CNN’s slight departure from leftist politics. She responded to instead saying, “CNN is dying a shameful death. They were a valid source. I grew up on the network. Today I’m ashamed of what they’ve become. And that weird right-wing kingpin attacking Biden’s speech is the nail in their coffin. With few exceptions, they ring Fox lite without Fox’s audience.

Conservative writer Carmine Sabia claimed Plutot was simply annoyed that CNN was opting for fairer reporting in the future. He slammed Rather, tweeting, “Dan Rather, as a reporter, who you pretended to be, you’re supposed to call balls and strikes, not pick a team. You are. John Hardwood has it does and that’s why CNN fired it and why Fox Lite’s wrath is all the rage. When injustice is your game, fairness seems unfair.

“CNN has gone completely MAGA because a Trumper has taken over,” tweeted lawyer and Democratic political influencer Pam Keith.

Yale professor Howard Forman responded to Rather, tweeting, “It IS noticed by this member of the public. CNN may soon become a parody of whataboutism and bothsidesism.”

Florida State Democrat Angie Nixon was alarmed by Rather’s confusion, writing, “It’s not good at all.”

Former Democratic nominee for Pennsylvania Auditor General Christina Hartman asked, “Are there students from Russia, Rwanda, Serbia, etc.? Will be fire. Not great, folks. Not great.
